Wireless Fence Problems versus Wired In-Ground Fences

I get questions like this quite often from people who installed their own “Wireless” fence systems. These are fences that I would compare to a WIFI router. They project a signal and as long as your dog’s collars are inside the signal radius, they are safe.
Questions received today (Saturday, 2/11/17 via email)
“I have the wireless containment system (brand removed) and have some questions. I have had it now for 3 years and it is starting to act weird. My dogs will be well within the boundary and the collars will beep them. The batteries are brand new, I have tried trouble shooting to reprogram collars to the main box and I’m just not sure what else to do. Can you help me?”
Our response:

You have defined exactly why we tell our customers that a Wireless fence is not as reliable as wired ones.  A wire in the ground is a stationary antenna. It is constantly energized at a specific strength, which means it always broadcast or projects a signal the same distance. As long as the collar stays away from the signal, nothing happens.  The dog collar is counting on NOT picking up the signal to keep from activating.
A wireless system activates from the ABSENCE OF SIGNAL. That means when the transmitter becomes inconsistent, or drops, or gets shut down or off, the collars will activate.  This is not fair to a dog who got used to going to the edge of the yard for the last 3 yrs, and today, he goes there and gets shocked because of a transmitter failure.
Compare this to a cell phone tower.  At one minute you have 5 bars, and a minute later you have 1 or 2. That is sort of the same thing.
I am unqualified to help anyone with a wireless system other than to tell them that it sounds like a transmitter problem because both collars are doing the same bad thing.
I have installed three of these systems in 23 yrs. I gave money back on all three.  I recommend staying away from them.
